Each week Kat sent 3 PDFs, which included a biography of the Canadian Woman the block represented, full instructions and helpful colour hints. So many life events prevented me from getting this completed during the sesquicentennial (retirement, loss of both parents, 2 hospitalizations, downsizing then selling of home, moving into a retirement home). It's been soooo long since I blogged! Well, the summer and birthday time have come and gone. I was the recipient of these lovely birthday flowers. I am officially that old - you know just buy her flowers old :( !
Since then my sister bought herself new living room furniture in a slate grey tweed with a blue strip.

So I got busy finishing off "Nocturne" from my UFO list!

I won this kit as a door prize, and luck would have it I brought it along with me.

The background fabric and 3 "turnover" packs were included, so all I had to buy was the batting and some backing.

My friend took me to FL (our local fabric store) where I lucked out and found some mid grey tweedy fabric for the backing. Woohoo!

I sent it out for machine quilting (only my 3rd time) and luckily she finished it before the holidays!

Here's the finished couch quilt .... Hope my sister likes it!
I decided that since I really wasn't using my car to go anywhere anymore, and it was such a hassle last year getting out every couple of weeks just to give the car a run, that I would sell my car. BIG decision as it's the last vestige of my independence. So I asked around if anyone knew anybody looking for a car. Well, as luck would have it the grand-daughter's boyfriend of my sister's friend was in the market. Having never sold a car privately before I was rather anxious, but it turned out to be a good experience. The young man was very helpful. He took the car for its safety, got the Used Car Info kit from Service Ontario, and in less the 2 weeks the car was sold (and for my asking price!)
He also gave me flowers - what a nice guy ! Darn it, why didn't I keep just one vase!!
Ok, I have to brag here .... The antique table and chairs in the pic below were mother's, as was the red tablecloth (only used @ Christmas). What is mine is the white crocheted lace tablecloth! Shortly after getting married (many, many moons ago) I crocheted a full sized echru tablecloth in this pattern. My then mother-in-law whined sooo much about never having anything so beautiful etc etc etc, that I finally gave it to her. I then promptly started a white version, but sadly left it unfinished in a bag for the next 40+ years, promising I'd finish it once I retired. Well, the time has come, the walrus said and voila - it's finished !! whooppeeeeeeeee!

Lucy Boston "Points of the Cross"

Started in 2015, finished in 2019
51 months.

This is an English paper piecing technique, which for me included hand cutting 1956 honeycombs, 1064 1" squares and 49 4" squares, for a total of 3069 pieces! Then hand cutting the fabric to cover all these papers. Then basting by hand the fabric around all these papers. Then joining one shape to another to form blocks, blocks into rows, rows into a quilt top, all hand sewn. I hand appliqued the border to quilt top. All of that took an incredible 51 very long eventful months! I hand quilted this beast, which took another 180 hours and I used 22 different colours of thread! I used the same black fabric from the border for the binding. Something I've not done before but I think looks nice.

I started this quilt when my mother was still with us, and it has seen many life events since, included mother's passing, father's passing, two hospitalizations and two cataract surgeries for me, plus selling my home and moving into a retirement home. So, this beastie has seen a lot!

Of course, now that I want them I can't find the three additional blocks I made but didn't use. I was contemplating using one of them for a label :(. So now I guess I'll have make something else with the remainder honeycombs, which is OK, just more work. But then again I'm not sure what the name of this one will be. I was contemplating Cataract 5, but then realized it has only been 4 years not 5. Someone on my Lucy Boston POTC FB group suggested "She Persisted", which isn't a bad name. Any one out there have another suggestion for a name?

I won't be doing much sewing for a while as I am currently experiencing another exacerbation of my COPD, and a case of Dupuytren's Contracture in my quilting hand! YIKES!!!!

Well, it was my brother-in-law's 70th Bday and of course the grandkids were all excited ;). I was greeted at the door by little William who is becoming quite the young charmer with his "Welcome Aunt Cindy" (the name my family use for me). What a sweetie, I haven't heard that much from him before, so his vocab is much improved ;). It was pretty obvious he had practised this greeting, which was so nice of my niece to tutor him.

In between playing cribbage, watching movies, trying to finish off my Lucy Boston and changing over my one and only closet from winter to spring I am working on this little beauty

I got the kit last year @ Mary Maxims and am finally working on it. Shouldn't take too long once I get the machine up off the floor where it's resting for the moment. Will post a pic once mine is finished.

So, I finally got my sewing mojo on and made up this wee rabbit as a door hanging for Easter. The pattern called for grey with white dots which of course I couldn't find, but think the white with grey dots work just fine :). And the fluffy tail was supposed to be minky fabric, which I also did not have - of course, so I used YoYos. Luckily I found some buttons in the one and only button jar I still have so she has an eye ! My friend is returning my button jars to me today and of course I'll never need any more buttons once they're returned. Isn't that always the way? I used the leftover strips for the binding and overall am happy with the results. Looking forward to Easter and hopefully gathering with the family for a nice dinner and get together.

Everyone is enjoying my April Showers hanging on my door right now. I made it a couple of years ago for mother. I fell in love with the umbrellas and rain boots fabric. I quilted rain drops but they don't show up very well on the dotty fabric. Never mind, it was fun to do .

So, I have something for Valentine's on my door. It's smallish but does the trick and seems the ladies here at Oakcrossing like it. I've had several positive comments, which is always nice.

Before my sister and her DH went off to sunnier climes for the month we had a family dinner to celebrate (2 weeks early) my great niece's 5th Bday. Of course I was unprepared so did the $ in a card method and suggested she and mommy enjoy some shopping. Well, looks like they did !

I'm told she got some stuffies, including a Unicorn. She looks happy doesn't she !

Glad to see Claire enjoyed her mini shopping spree :). In the meantime I've been keeping busy hand quilting on my Lucy Boston. I'm about 1/3 done, but this week has been a bust as I've had the plaque for the last few days. Hope it's not the dreaded FLU - as that's what I had the last 2 winters, which hospitalized me and put me here @ Oakcrossing. DON'T NEED THAT AGAIN!!

Also been busy reading. Finished off Doris Lessing's Golden Notebook . Can see why it was a sensation when it was first published but not sure it is quite the earthshaker it was when first written. Also polished off The In- Between World of Vikram Lall by M G Vassanji - would definitely recommend this one, and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak also excellent! Can you tell what I've been doing this winter .... lots of reading ;)

Not that I'm prejudiced, but I truly think it's better with the black borders. TG as it took over a week to applique them on ! so I'm NOT taking them off. Now to find the backing fabric. It's somewhere in a box under the bed. Somewhere I haven't looked since the movers threw the boxes under there. Guess what I'll be doing this week ;). Once the backing is seamed up then I'll be crawling on the floor as I baste it all together. I'm planing on hand quilting this beauty. It will take me months, but what else do I have to do, and anyway it's all hand done so far why stop now. In the mean time guess it's sock knitting for me!!
Happy holidays to all. It's been awhile since my last post. Indeed, I have been chastened about my indolence. Well, in my defence (and there really is no defence) I've been somewhat busy getting my Lucy (Lucy Boston paper pieced Points of the Cross) quilt top together. It's now together with borders, pic to follow soon as I finish getting the papers and basting removed. And, with the holidays and celebrations and gatherings of friends, etc., I just haven't had time for much else. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
My time has been occupied, and I did manage to finish off 2 of my 3 retrieved Piecemaker's 2002 Seasons blocks - see December's block above. It's hard to see in this pic, but I embroidered Noel in copper thread in the bottom left corner, and in silver thread Joy in the bottom right corner. You can see the pink Peace in the top right. I also added a wee doilie (from grandma) and the only piece of Tatting I have ever done. If you look carefully you will also see a couple of pine cone buttons, and of course the big bad wolf! I like this one, and it has been a real hit here at Oak Crossing.
Bottom half of my Lucy Boston with all the connector blocks added. I was so thrilled to get to this point that I just had to see what it will look like. Mourning the loss of my design wall, I improvised and used the floor. Luckily my camera phone was still able to catch a reasonable pic. Have a look
So the next week or so will be busy sewing these two halves together. Then appliqueing the border on, finding my backing and making the big decision as to hand quilting or sending it out to be machine quilted. Which would you choose?
So this weekend was my guild's quilt show and I have to start off with this Canada 150 quilt made by Jacqui. I've been wondering how I was going to put the blocks together on my version - sashing/no sashing/what colour, etc. I'm really liking her use of black, but think I may go for a dark charcoal rather than a true black. Lovely quilt Jacqui - thanks for the inspiration!
Always loved this pattern of community in the round. Thought her use of background colour was interesting.

This one block wonder with a panel in the middle is another one of Jacqui's. She's so creative! Lovely mix of colours. Gives me more ideas for that OBW project I have in the back of my mind;)

Some more inspiration with the layout of this Dresden Plate - almost modern :). Uh huh - liking it!
A couple of kids quilts from Beth. So whimsical. Too bad my kids quilts days are over as I so love this pattern. If you look close you'll
see they are not identical. I think Beth had fun making these ;)

Another whimsical quilt - from Barb I think. Again, love the colours !
So I saved a few things from the old homestead, and glad I did as it makes a nice tablescape for the Fall. The leaves are starting to turn colours so I went for a wee drive this afternoon. Lovely to get out & about. Lots of fun and activity since my last post. Claire has started school, and loves it!
Thanksgiving has come and gone, but I missed the trip to Len's Mills and our evening guild meeting as I was not feeling the best. Have learned to take it very easy when my body tells me to :(. This week coming is William's 2nd birthday.
I wanted to buy him a trunk, he's truck crazy right now, but didn't get out to shop for that either :(. Also this week I anticipate a visit from a friend & hopefully may retrieve some of my crazy quilt patches which I hope to make into door hangings. Our guild's quilt show is at the end of the week and I am soooo looking forward to it and to shopping @ the vendors booths (not that I need anything!)
I promised myself I would start working on my Canada 150 quilt in Oct. Well, it's the middle of the month and I haven't opened the sewing machine yet ;(. Got to get myself in gear or it will never get done! Ha ha ha, what can you do, although I admit to still be working on my Lucy Boston - the bottom half is now officially done, and I have just 3 connector blocks to finish the top. Then join the two halves and applique a border and it will be ready for quilting. Ohhhh, the end is in sight!
I'm a (skinny) senior! August is birthday month and I am officially now a senior. I still feel like I'm 20 something, but glad I'm not ;) It was a lovely day so we all sat outside and William was very busy playing. He's becoming a real lady killer !
It's been a busy month so far, what else is new. I've even gotten out and about on my own a couple of times. Took my buddies out for a lovely dinner at Villa Cornelia as a Thank You and to celebrate. It was a very pleasant dinner and evening with the girls. Would be nice if we could do this more often and not just wait for special occasions.

This totally describes me pre-move!! Little did I know there was an actual word for it ! Having been convinced by friends and family that I would not have room for all my books, I got rid of 3-4 boxes of tomes, some (most?) I had not yet read. So I guess I fit the term Tsundoku quite well. It's summer so I'm reading a bit, mornings and before bed, so I may just catch up on all those intended reads yet! I am currently reading Jude the Obscure, and prior to that Deafening by Francis Itani. Lets just hope, having given away more than 1/2 of my library that I don't run out of good reading material. Guess I'll need to make a trip to the local second hand book shop where you can get good lit at good prices :).
Next week it's celebration time. It's my 65th this month and I'm taking a leaf from dear papa's book and throwing my own Bday party. My friends were so good to help me with the move and I owe them an evening of fine dining, so that's celebration #1. I'm hosting the Sew What's group the next day, and that will be a first at the new digs! We'll see how it all works out, We'll gather in the "Queens Kitchen" a communal room on the first floor, and two of the ladies who haven't yet hosted are bringing the goodies; celebration #2. And to end the week my sister has promised a weekend BBQ, celebration #3. I think I deserve it!! Pics to follow.
I've been working diligently on the connector blocks for the last rows of my Lucy Boston POTC. I miscalculated and ran out of the black fabric I was using in the connectors so had to lay the whole thing out on the floor (OH HOW I MISS MY DESIGN WALL!) to determine how many were missing. The coffee table makes a pretty good substitute cutting table, and the mats are hidden under the couch - see, I knew what I was doing with that slipcover ;). The next big hurdle will be to discover if my "sewing centre" will work for me. Built over 4 shelf units it looks good, holds my "stuff" but appears to be a bit high. I may have to get a stool to sit on. We'll see. I have to admit, although I am missing several items that have gone bye bye, I am not regretting any of my decisions to let those things go. I have all I need and this place is filled but not stuffed beyond capacity.
My move to a retirement home that is. It's been a long and stressful haul :( not helped by my poor health and a couple of heat waves! None-the-less the worst is over - YEAH! My newly slip covered couch and chair arrived today so I finally have somewhere to sit - bonus!
I went with an off white fabric. I always wanted a white couch and now am hoping I don't regret it. We'll see. I placed Dad's quilt over the back and the small green cushions from my former front hall church pew. Love the look, so am happy. See, some things do work out :)
I've placed my remaining artwork around the room. Still have to put my few knick knacks out, but it's beginning to feel homey. The unpacking is all done and I admit to very few regrets re what was left behind, given away or sold off. It's quite an adjustment and way more than I had planned or anticipated. The packing was helped tremendously by friends and family. A HUGE THANK YOU to my sister Christine, brother-in-law Vince and nephew Mark, and my friends Ann, Susan and Mibs :). The adjustment phase has not been quite as easy with some indelicate (aka thoughtless, not funny) remarks about how I got rid of things, what I got rid of, or my present state of health ... What can you do except
I have 2 large rooms and set up a sewing nook in the back corner. Doesn't look like much and a lot less than what I had in the condo, but it's better than nothing. The desk to the right can be used as my cutting table. I don't do too much (read that as almost none) machine quilting, preferring to hand quilt, so this should work out. I did have to give up my design wall which I will sorely miss.

I salvaged a wee bit of china (my strawberry basket, teapot, cream & sugar, some cake plates and 4 coffee mugs) and have stowed those away in my jam cupboard. As you can see I also brought along my stereo and one of my stained glass windows and my stars :).

The bedroom is large which is good as I have used one wall to build shelving to hold my stuff, these rooms have a serious lack of closet space, coming from 4 closets down to 2 :(. I kept 6 of the best of my vintage quilts and plan on hanging them on the vintage drying racks beside the bed. When I finally get my Canada 150 quilt done I plan on hanging it over the bed on the wood curtain rod I saved from my parents home.

They provide the valances and window blinds so it was no problem leaving all my window coverings at the condo. Closing on my condo was yesterday and the $ should be in my account shortly - woohoo! Now to get on with the remaining move related tasks and get back to my quilting! Next month I'll be hosting our sewing group here so they'll all get to see what modern retirement homes are all about, they feed me three times per day, clean my place once per week, change my bed and launder my linens once per week. I get to live on one floor, don't have to cook, clean or grocery shop. And even better, they'll get my car from the lot, clean it off and deliver it to the door for me this winter. Not a bad deal as far as I'm concerned. Well that's all my "news" for now, but my family has had some fun news - they got to see/pose with the Stanley Cup!! My sister's neighbour works for the Washington Capitals and for some reason was allowed to bring the cup home for a weekend. So ...

So, last week I was at the house to talk with a lady about making slipcovers for my couch and chair. I've wanted to do this for a while now. There's nothing wrong with the current upholstery except it's "old lady floral" and reminds me of mother (it was her set). So now that I'm moving it's time for a change. The slipcover company (Accent Upholstery) will remove the couch & chair from my condo and deliver it to my new residence, then remove the "extra" chair I'm taking with me to the new abode while I await the newly slipcovered set. Sounds like a win win for me.

So, while we are perusing fabric swatches the slipcover lady looks around and says "I see you like antiques, are any for sale?" to which I reply "Yes, some". Slipcover lady says "My sister has a shop in ..... can I call her?" Next thing I know her sister and DH arrive and the 2 ladies run around the condo buying up all kinds of small and large antique/collectible stuff. I walk out the door $900 richer and much less stuff to pack & move ! Felt like I was in an episode of

It's summer and time for ice cream !! at least that's what Princess Claire thinks and I agree !

It's almost the end of May and my plans for my summer have changed dramatically :( :( :(.
The original plan was to sell the condo in March, have my cataract surgery in April, go apartment hunting in May, and in June pack up all my worldly possessions then move in July. Sounds like a reasonable plan - right?
Well, we all know what happens with Best laid plans ... something always goes awry! For me it started with another case of Influenza (I think I know who shared - grrrrr). It put me back in the hospital, this time for 8 days :( :(. Once I was well enough to leave the hospital it was decided I should go into respite care as I was too weak to go home alone, so off I went to Oakcrossing a new Retirement home in town.

It has now been decided that I will stay here on one of their "Independent living" floors. The benefits of staying are:

no stairs

not having to go outside to collect my mail or take out the garbage

not having to pay someone to clean up after me

not having to clean off the car in the winter (they will do it for me)

I can come and go as I please

no grocery shopping

no cooking

should I need it again, assisted living (respite care) is "in house"

it's real close to my sister, friends, Doctor, bank, etc.

The disadvantages of moving into Retirement Living

having to downsize more dramatically than I planned as I now have to squeeze into 2 rooms - YIKES

much more expensive than living on my own in an apartment

I'm the youngest one here (besides staff) - YIKES I'm surrounded by old fogies

So, with much trepidation I am now in the process of figuring how to divest myself of unwanted (antique) furniture, 3 sets of china, and 2 cats!! The two cats are a real problem. Simone, She who can not be touched is proving to be very wily. My sister and her DH have set a "live trap" in the laundry room (where she hides) for 3 weeks now and still Simone has not been caught!

I am heartbroken that I can not take care of my fur babies any longer and can't find anyone to adopt them. I don't blame people for not wanting to take on She who can not be touched, but poor Iris is such a sweetie. What can you do. So right now they are both at home, alone (except for each other). My sister is going over each day and feeding them (what a chore!) as well as dropping by Oakcrossing with this and that for me.

Some of my quilting friends are dropping by on Wednesday to start the packing process - this time I am hopeful we can pack up what's left of my sewing room, and maybe, just maybe even get the Limoges and the Aynsley packed! I am so blessed to have a willing and helpful sister and such great friends!!!
So that's my life in a nut shell right now. I'm being pampered @ Oakcrossing, 3 meals a day, snacks brought to my door twice per day, housekeeping and free WiFi and internet. I'm walking the halls with my walker 2-3 times per day trying to gain strength and missing my home and my garden :(. I'm also missing all the great quilt shows this Spring and trying hard not to get too sad about that. On the bright side I'm still working away joining up rows for my Lucy Boston. Who knows I may finish that project yet!
Well my cacti decided to flower just in time for Easter and my Open House. Wasn't that nice of them? Yup, you read that right .... I've been a busy girl - again. Another round of downsizing and paper shredding (burnt out one paper shredder, luckily I had another). Not completely done yet.

Put my condo on the market on a Wednesday, had 16 showings Thursday and Friday, an Open House on Saturday & Sunday with 20 viewings. Rested on Monday and accepted offers on Tuesday. Sold for way more than my asking price so I'm happy about that :) Rather ambivalent about the move as I really did expect to enjoy my condo for a few more years, but health wise decided it was best to make the move now while I still can manage it. Have a long closing date so will be able to enjoy one more Spring and part of the Summer. Hard part next is to find an appropriate apartment and <strike>resign</strike> adapt myself to this change of live style.

As if all that wasn't enough I also have the additional treat of dealing with a nasty bout of my IBS and the return of a Frozen Shoulder this time on the right side (last time it was the left shoulder). My cataract surgery is this coming week, which will be good as I'm real tired of the world being fuzzy and want to get this over with. Geeze I'm a wreck these days :(. You know how hard it is when you can't see, you're right dominant, in pain all the time and can't carry or move your arm? Ok, enough of my whinning.

I have managed to get some sewing done, here are the next three blocks of my Canada 150 quilt. Nothing more will be done on this project probably until after the move as I can't see well enough for these tiny pieces. I also got rows one and two hand sewn together for my Lucy Boston. So some progress on the quilting front.
It's a warning to myself about things which I have noticed this week. Each morning I listen to CBC Radio 1. One of their morning broadcasts includes the "Q" with the host Tom Power. So the first of my warnings is never never see a pic of the real host. Just as a favourite book often turns into a disappointing movie the real image of the host will not match your imagination. Here's Tom Power (for real). Not the svelte black guy I imagined.

My second warning also involves CBC radio host of Sunday Edition, Michael Enright.

Are you kidding me???? OK, Sunday Edition is eruidte, intelligent and informative, which is why l listen each week, but are you kidding? Who is this guy ???? Ha ha ha ha ha!! I post these warnings to all listeners/readers out there. Check your assumptions as to what someone looks like - you're probably way off!

My final public service announcement is to never never never use your connector fabric for honeycombs in one of your Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses (LBPOTC) blocks!! For the last couple of weeks I have been stitching up 7 connector blocks for the top of my Lucy Boston, only to discover that opps- I had forgotten/miscalculated and the top/bottom also needs 3 additional honeycombs and 1" squares between each connector block! Hmmmm. Ok, I'll just cut more. YIKES I'm 8" short !!!!!! and I can't find that fabric anywhere anymore. WAHHHHHHHHHHH

Here's a pic of my progress so far. as you can see there are 4 rows of beige honeycombs with black 1" squares (up/down arrows) between the connector blocks (diagonal arrows).

And here is the offending block, made very early in my Lucy career (my only excuse ). So what's a girl to do? Well I found some"other" black fabric and guess I will use it strategically so that it looks as if I planned it ;) ;)

Time to take a rest! I've been busy doing a second round of downsizing, starting in my sewing room. Every year my guild holds a rummage sale. You dig out patterns and fabrics and other sewing related items you no longer want/need, price it for others to enjoy. The proceeds of the rummage sale goes to our community outreach group, so it's all in a good cause and is a great way to downsize :) Below are three bags ready for the sale. My quilting buddy is picking them up today and taking them to the sale for me as I'm not sure I'll make it again this year given the temp outside! Good thing for me anyway as I would be tempted to buy more fabric which would defeat my downsizing. Anything which doesn't sell will go straight to the Goodwill, adding to the 2 bags of fabric I will be sending directly to them (fabric too old/ugly to go to the rummage sale!)

It is actually quite tiring going through all your fabric bins, measuring and labeling and packaging it all up. Tiring but necessary and helpful in the end. I have already sent off 2 bins of "baby" fabric and a bag of misc fabrics to our community group, a bag full of Batiks and a bin of 1930's fabric to my quilting buddy. So all in all I'm doing quite well with my downsizing. Which rather surprises me when I look in the cupboard and still see bins of fabric!!

In the non downsizing hours I've been prepping for more Lucy Boston work. 300 Honeycombs and 200 1" squares (not in the pic)! Now I'm putting these together into the 25 final connector blocks. These blocks will all have the same center fabrics to bring a bit of symmetry to the quilt. I hope it looks as good I think it will ;).

A few weeks back my quilting buddy and I went to the Marsh store where I picked up some lovely black fabric for the final border. While downsizing I got lucky and found my bin of backing fabrics. I have enough beige/off white backings for 4 quilts and a lovely black backing hopefully big enough for my Lucy !! Will decide which to use when the time comes - if ever !
On to my closets one more time in my downsizing quest. Have already made a list of what furniture will go when I move. Now to connect with a realtor and get ready for the big sale! Have pretty much made the decision to go into an apartment where I can be on one floor and garbage disposal and mail pickup will be easier. This will be a difficult, sad transition for both me and the cats but what can you do :(.

Sorry it's been so long blogging. My camera died :( and it's replacement (mom's) didn't have the cable to connect from camera to laptop so had to wait for delivery from Amazon. And of course the holidays got in the way too. It was a different year for us as we celebrated with both parents gone now, so only 3 generations instead of 4. My sister, her DH and I are now the "senior" generation!!

Every time I get my car dug out and cleaned off it snows AGAIN! Enough already - I can't keep up! You can't even see the trunk of my poor Maple in this pic the snow drift is so high!! I've been stuck in the house for 2+ weeks now :( At least the cold snap has ended - sort of ....

One thing about being stuck inside is you get a lot of sewing time :) Hand sewing that is. I got all the blocks and their connectors sewn together into rows for my Lucy Boston - YEAH

Now I have to do more prep work and make up the half blocks and corners for the edges. That will take a surprisingly longish time :(, but at least the end is in sight now- Whoopee!

No progress on the Canada 150 quilt :(, but I'll get back to it soonish. For now I'm happy with my work on Lucy, and the second pair of socks I'm knitting.

For some reason the leaves on my Japanese Maple turned brown (not red) shriveled up but did not fall off ! So my tree is still loaded with leaves and I am wondering if I should be worried this winter, not that I can do anything about it ..... We got 5 cm of snow last night, and they are predicting a possible 30 more cms tonight! Guess I'll find out tomorrow if the weather predictors are correct and if my tree can take that much snow. Oh No - wish me luck as I really don't want to lose my beautiful tree! The people behind me have a large sugar Maple which also didn't lose it's leaves. Must have been something in the weather this Fall.
Have been feeling under the weather this last couple of weeks so not much sewing, but did manage to get out to the annual Sew What's holiday gathering. This year we did something different and went out to a restaurant for dinner instead of our usual potluck! It was so nice to see everyone and get out of the house, just wish I had been feeling a bit better and hungrier as it was an all-you-can-eat buffet.
My "Christmas" Cactus is blooming and my retirement Orchid has 3 blossoms since the beginning of November. YEAH!! Nice to have live flowers in the house. The condo people have been around and we now have 2 new trees in my front yard, and one in the back. Another Yeah, and they finally came around and trimmed my Forsythias and Rose of Sharon, so a final Yeah. Things are looking good for the holiday season, although I am waaaaay behind in my shopping which is usually done by this time. My family do the draw a name from the hat thing, and we kinda forgot to do that at Thanksgiving :(. But then, we were all sick with a cold, I'll blame it on that. Here's this year's front door decoration
The patio has been put to bed for the season, and I am enjoying the last lovely days of Autumn, although today is a dull rainy Sunday :(. I've been down with a cold the last couple of weeks but feeling better now, hence not much to show sewing wise. I have been busy though .... of course ;). This month our Sewing group's hostesses was also sick with a cold so I had to call around and find a new location for the group and then let everyone know. That change of venue also necessitated a change of plans on the transferal of two bins of the group's donated items for Wellspring. This task accomplished I was then onto the transferal of the 30 vintage quilts I donated to the guild. Another task accomplished, and I can now see my kitchen floor = YEAH. My sock knitting classes have begun and I have half a sock knit already = YEAH. And of course I am back at prepping Lucy Boston parts. Boring but necessary. This week I'll be making along with making place mats for the guild's donation to Meals on Wheels, so no, I won't have any 150 Canadian Women blocks to show off :(.
I'm sharing a photo of my great niece Claire and her brother William posted by my niece to FB (hope she doesn't mind, but this pic is just too cute). It's been a couple of weeks of family stuff :) First there was Thanksgiving. The turkey was wonderful, sorry no pics. I made my usual coleslaw and took a Pumpkin pie. Both were a hit.
I've been busy sewing. Blocks 79-84. I'm happy with the fabric choices and almost got my stripes aligned. That was my first time working with stripes and trying to get them all straight. Maybe next time! I'm back at prepping hexies for the connector blocks for my Lucy Boston. Boring but necessary work. This may take another week or so before I can continue with making the connector blocks. And just to add to this a quilt friend donated/gave to me a baggie of hexies, some already put together into Grandmother's Flower Garden. Love them, but boy or boy, my work never seems to end! (not complaining). And to add to all this I decided it was time to start working on the personal items on my bucket list so I signed myself up for a class on knitting socks! I know how to knit, but it's been 20+ years since my last creation, so I need a refresher!
Moving along with the downsizing, the guild has decided to take all my vintage quilts that I don't want. what they can't use they will send to the Men's Mission, so every one will have a good home. Now to just them out of my living room !
